'Two
kinds' by Amy Tan
Amy tan, a young, quite
and shy Chinese girl was born in America. She was living with her mother in
Chinatown on Sacramento Street in San Francisco (California). Her mother was an
ambitious Chinese woman, who wants her daughter to be an American prodigy. Her
mother had come to America in 1949, after losing everything in china; her home,
her husband and her daughters. This story is all about what Amy’s mother wants
Amy to be and what Amy Wants to be. Amy’s mother believes that she could be
anything she wanted to be in America. Her mother wants her to be perfect in
everything. This story takes place around the 1960’s. In the beginning, When
she got haircut from a training school, it made her very mad with her mother
because did not like it at all. After that when her mother sent her for piano
classes to Mr. Chong, She did not like it too because she was not interested in
it. At the talent show, she made her mother very disappointed because she did
not do well at the show and she made her mother embarrass in front of her
friends, Aunt Linda and her cousin Waverly. After the talent show when her
mother reminds her about the piano lessons, she refused to go to the piano
lessons. Her mother forced her to go and as a result they both had terrible arguments. She shouted at her mother and she said she wished that she
were dead as her twin sisters. This was the first time when her mouth stopped
saying things to her and after that everything changed. Her mother never said
anything to her after the fight. She had stopped going for piano classes. After few years, on her 30th birthday, her mother offered her piano. She accepted it as a
sign of forgiveness. later after her mother’s death when she played the piano, she
realized that she enjoyed playing it and she is a good piano player.
